Offered is the actual original artwork to card #77 of Detroit Tigers Hall of Famer Charlie Gehringer, from the 1935 R327 Diamond Stars National Chicle baseball card set. This is a very attractive card from the series, and one which is an ideal example as it displays all the artistic elements characteristic of the R327 set. Original artwork from this series - or any prewar series for that matter - is extremely rare! This is only the third time we have ever offered an original R327 card artwork in more than 20 years! The Diamond Stars set is highly prized by collectors in large part because of the beautiful artwork and art deco-inspired designs of the set. The detail and the geometric background designs of the offered example are exceptional. Artwork for card sets from the 1930s are exceedingly rare. Back in the late 1970’s a group of material surfaced in the collecting world directly from the family of a National Chicle employee, which included approximately thirty original R327 Diamond Star artworks. The offered artwork very likely originates directly from this historic find. It is an exceptional example of original 1930s gum card artwork! As is the case with all Diamond Stars artworks, the artwork is on thick artist’s board, and measures 4.5 x 5.5 inches. Extremely clean, with sharp, bright, crisp colors. Gehringer's name and team are lightly written in pencil along the bottom border. Excellent condition overall.
