Send up the fireworks, ring the bells, fire the cannons, and cue the marching band, because great fanfare is order, to welcome this 1941-1942 Joe DiMaggio game-used bat. Just before he marched off for WWII military service, “Joltin’ Joe” used this weapon during his historic assault on opposing pitchers, and the record books. 1941 was a truly historic season, that saw DiMaggio and his 56-game hitting streak, edge out .406 hitter Ted Williams for the AL MVP award. For good measure, DiMaggio led the New York Yankees to a World Series championship in 1941, and an the American League pennant in 1942, with this bat in his hands at some point during the period.
This Louisville Slugger model Y4 bat is a Joe DiMaggio signature model, with a facsimile autograph burned into the barrel. Positively identified from the labeling period 1941-1942, this streak era bat has the weight “35-1/2” stamped into the knob, per DiMaggio’s request. Signs of authentic use are contact marks, baseball stitch impressions, bat rack streaks, and light gripping agent residue. A professional restoration to replace a piece out of the barrel is noted on the accompanying LOA, and the result is outstanding, with abundant display appeal.
It is reported that this bat was presented directly to the original recipient by DiMaggio, upon finishing a round of batting practice. PSA/DNA has assigned this historic bat a game use grade of (GU 7.5), and the LOA states in conclusion “After a thorough examination of this Joe DiMaggio professional model bat and its player use characteristics, it our opinion the bat is authentic, and was game used by DiMaggio during the referenced labeling period. The bat exhibits excellent use and possesses identifiable player use characteristics.”.
Only a select few baseball immortals have matched DiMaggio’s blend of power and grace on the field, and few records are as treasured as his 1941 hitting streak. Along with “Babe” Ruth’s “called shot”, and Don Larsen’s 1956 World Series perfect game, DiMaggio’s streak is one of the most storied events the game has ever seen. Owning a piece of game-used equipment from this era, is a crowning achievement for even the most advanced collector, so take your shot at making collecting history.
